Berita #2: Termites eat through $222,000 worth of rupee notes in Indian bank

Termites ate through 10 million rupees at an Indian bank last week, but 'lax' bank employees were blamed by state officials

A major bank heist in India has been pinned on some real pests - termites. The bugs ate their way through notes worth 10 million rupees - about $222,000 - in a bank in the northern Indian town of Arthur. Investigators have been stumped as to how the tiny bank robbers sneaked into a steel chest to commit the crime, which was discovered on April 19. "It's a matter of investigation how termites attacked bundles of currency notes stacked in a steel chest," local police officer Navneet Rana told reporters last week. The bank's manager, however, told the Global Post that the bank is housed in an old wood building and has been infested with termites. Officials with the State Bank of India ruled Monday that the little culprits had accomplices working on the inside. "As it was the bank's fault, it will bear the loss caused due to termites eating up the currency notes and there will be no loss to the public," Abhay Singh, general manager of the State Bank of India, told the Indian Express newspaper. Police opened an investigation into possible negligence charges.
